308 Brass History
The “308” was introduced by Winchester in 1952 as the “.308 Winchester” based upon the popular 30-06, and two years later NATO adopted the redesigned case as the “7.62x51 NATO”. The 308 has slightly more drop at long distances than the 30-06 due to less recoil, however, it is still used in long distance shooting to over 1,000 yards such as F Class and Palma. According to many sources, this cartridge is considered the standard hunting case for the United States.
The brass case has become the parent case to several of the newer lighter recoil cases such as the .260, 6.5 Creedmoor and 7mm-08. Many handloaders have resized their 308 brass cases to the newer cases when the supply was unavailable for their needs.
SAAMI standards for this case indicate it should be Large Rifle primer. Maximum over all case length is set to 2.015 - .020 so anything between 1.995 and 2.015 is considered acceptable. As usual, the trim to length is .010 less that the maximum length (2.005).
